This project, developed by Cultural Heritage Informatics Fellows at Michigan State University (2024), is a representation of how cinematic memory can relate to significant memories in American history. “Cinematic and National Memory: Mapping Forrest Gump” gives twenty examples of different locations (either filming location or direct location) highlighted in the 1994 film, Forrest Gump and how the personal memories of one individual relates to a larger national memory of America. Click on each map point to learn more about these interconnected memories and their significance, or use the time slider to navigate through different time periods.
